Undergraduate Degrees

The School of Public Administration offers two undergraduate degrees and four minors.

Degree programs include the Bachelor of Science in Public Policy and Management and the joint degree leading to the Bachelor of Science in Public Policy, Management and Planning. The School of Public Administration also offers minors in public management, public policy, human resources management and health services administration.

Admission

High school and transfer students may indicate their desire to declare public policy and management or public policy, management and planning as a major on their university application. Students enrolled at USC wishing to declare public policy and management or public policy, management and planning must be in good academic standing and have completed a minimum of 24 USC units.

Advisement

Students must discuss courses of study with the appropriate undergraduate advisors throughout their college enrollment and need to develop their own individual programs with faculty and staff advisors at the time of first enrollment and throughout their college careers.

Bachelor of Science in Public Policy and Management

Degree Program

Students enrolled in the Bachelor of Science in Public Policy and Management major receive an undergraduate professional education in the context of a broad, liberal education. Breadth is demonstrated through completion of courses outside the School of Public Administration (74 units), including the areas of: general education, transnational studies and math and computer languages; pre-major requirements in economics, political science and sociology; and general electives.

The course of study within the major (54 units) includes three components: a common core of courses, including an internship, that provides a broad foundation; a choice of one of three specialized tracks -- public institutions and public policy, public management, or health care policy and management; and policy area electives in an issue area of the student's choice.

Other special features of the undergraduate programs include the semester programs and the senior honors seminar.

Careers in Public Policy and Management

Graduates receive preparation for a variety of entry-level professional positions in the public sector, in not-for-profit agencies and in for-profit companies which provide public policy and public services or which must be knowledgeable of, and sensitive to, public policy and public affairs concerns. Graduates also are prepared for law school and related careers in law, as well as for graduate work in such fields as policy analysis, business and public administration, health services administration, gerontology and social work.

36 units total, or 28 additional units if e. and f. are satisfied by PPMT 200 or PPMT 220 and/or pre-major courses.

Expository Writing 101 and 102

The Natural World -- two courses. Select one course in two of the following categories:
a. Earth Sciences

b. Physical Sciences

c. Life Sciences

Humanities and Social Sciences (No more than two courses may count for both GE requirements and general, pre-major or major requirements.)

Choose one course in three of the following categories:

a. Literature

b. The Arts

c. Western Culture I

Non-Western Cultures

Choose one course in each of the following categories:

e. American Public Life (This category may be fulfilled by completing PPMT 220 Simulated Policy Making in Urban Systems or PPMT 200 Politics and Public Policy or POSC 100 Theory and Practice of American Democracy or SOCI 342 Race Relations)

f. Empirical Approaches (This category may be fulfilled by completing SOCI 200 Introduction to Sociology, ECON 203 Principles of Microeconomics or ECON 205 Principles of Macroeconomics)

Diversity Requirement

All students beginning at USC or elsewhere fall semester 1993 or later must pass one course from the list of courses approved to meet the standard diversity requirement. These courses carry the designation "m" for multiculturalism.
