The institute conducts research and education in the management of technology -- the analysis, design and management of technology-based programs and organizations. Within this overall mission, its programs focus on four areas: (1) managing human-technological systems to improve their performance and productivity; (2) analyzing and managing risks to people, property and environment associated with the use of technology; (3) analyzing and designing interfaces between people and high technology systems; and (4) analyzing and designing organizational systems for managing technology, e.g., information systems, decision support systems, expert systems.
A solid, comprehensive educational program in technology management needs interdisciplinary inputs from management, engineering and science. The institute integrates systems management, human factors/ergonomics and the safety sciences to produce the required systems approach.
The institute has a strong research effort for the discovery of knowledge about this important area and five academic degree programs for communicating this knowledge: a Bachelor of Science in Safety and Health, Master of Science programs in Human Factors and Ergonomics, Systems Management, Safety and Health and a Ph.D. in Human Factors.
