Undergraduate Degree Programs

Bachelor of Science in Safety and Health

The Bachelor of Science in Safety and Health provides students with an excellent undergraduate education for a professional field which, according to the California Employment Development Department, is among the most rapidly growing and highly rewarding in the state.

USC safety students enjoy opportunities in a wide range of industrial, service and governmental organizations. Recent graduates have been hired by such diversified firms and agencies as the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power, UNOCAL, the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Warner Brothers Studios, the city of Glendale, the Port of Los Angeles, the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, Hughes Aircraft, IBM, Rockwell International, the Farmers Insurance Group and the state of California.

USC safety and health students are assured a solid, well-rounded undergraduate education. The B.S. in Safety and Health is a multidisciplinary program which provides the education necessary to understand and use modern safety and health concepts to minimize risk. It uses the systems approach to hazard prevention which draws from such fields as technology management, human factors, health, environmental sciences and communications. Further curriculum enrichment is gained from the disciplines of engineering, education, law, physiology, psychology and the natural sciences.

Requirements

A total of 128 units -- 36 units of general education, 39 units of pre-major requirements, 30 units of safety and health major requirements, 9 units of technical electives and 14 units of open electives -- are required for the Bachelor of Science in Safety and Health degree.

General Education Requirements

Students must successfully complete the composition skill level (Expository Writing 101 and Expository Writing 102), PSYC 100, ECON 203 or 205, and one course from each of the following categories: American Public Life, Ethical Approaches, Western Culture, Non-Western Cultures and Literature or the Arts.

Diversity Requirement

All students must pass one course from the list of courses approved to meet the standard diversity requirement. These courses carry the designation "m" for multiculturalism.
