Courses in engineering were first offered in 1906 in the basement of one of the oldest buildings on campus. Today, 140 full-timefaculty serve about 1,600 undergraduates and 2,000 graduate students,utilizing state-of-the-art laboratories, classrooms and live interactivebroadcast systems. The School of Engineerings research programof over $80 million per year is funded through strong ties withgovernment and industry.The goals of the School of Engineering are: to provide undergraduateand graduate programs of instruction for qualified students leadingto academic degrees in engineering; to extend the frontiers ofengineering knowledge by encouraging and assisting faculty inthe pursuit and publication of research; to stimulate and encouragein its students those qualities of scholarship, leadership, andcharacter that mark the true academic and professional engineer;to serve the industrial community of California and the nationin providing for the continuing education of engineering and scientificpersonnel; and to provide professional engineering leadershipin the solution of community, regional, national and global problems.
The School of Engineering offers various programs leading to theBachelor of Science, Master of Science and Engineer degrees; and,through the Graduate School, the Doctor of Philosophy degree.
