Specialist and service credentials are earned in conjunction with a master's degree or with the doctorate.

Credential requirements may change due to state law. Students are advised to consult periodically with the Office of Student Services for current credential requirements. The following requirements are common to the specialist and service credentials:

(1) Holding a valid basic teaching credential (or for the specialist, concurrently completing a basic teaching credential program).

(2) Admission to the School of Education's master's or doctoral program.

(3) A program of studies approved by an appropriate faculty advisor in the School of Education.

(4) Achievement of an overall "pass" on the California Basic Educational Skills Test (CBEST).

Preliminary and Professional Administrative Services Credentials

Credentials-only programs are not available. Requirements for both administrative credentials may be met as a function of successful completion of the Ed.D. program. All of the proscribed competencies and field work for both the Preliminary and Professional Administrative Credentials have been integrated into the Ed.D. program through the following steps:

(1) Verification of three years of teaching, counseling, librarianship or administrative experience.

(2) Verification of having earned a master's degree relevant to professional education.

(3) Admission to the Ed.D. program.

The above listed courses do not represent the total course requirements for the Ed.D. degree; they represent the minimum configuration of courses necessary to meet all credential competencies.
