Master of Science in International Public Administration

The Master of Science in International Public Administration is offered jointly by the School of Public Administration and the School of International Relations.

Students take courses in international relations and in public administration, serve an internship in another country and develop their competency in other areas.

The program is administered by a faculty committee drawn from both schools. It is offered at the University Park Campus only.

Requirements for Admission

Candidates for admission must have demonstrated academic ability by maintaining a B average during their undergraduate degree work; must have a score of 530 or above on the verbal and 520 or above on the quantitative portions of the Graduate Record Examinations (GRE) or have comparable scores on the Graduate Management Aptitude Test (GMAT); and must demonstrate a working knowledge of a foreign language. They must also satisfy other requirements common to both schools. Alternatives may be allowed through petition.

Students may be required to select an area course -- e.g., Asia, Latin America, Middle East -- that links to their language preparation and their intended internship experience.

A minimum of 24 units must be taken in public administration and international relations. The remaining 12 units may be taken from these schools or from other USC schools or departments. All courses must be approved by the M.S., International Public Administration faculty advisement committee. Courses taken outside the two schools must have the approval of this committee and the approval of the representatives of the schools or departments where the courses are to be taken.

Other Requirements

Students are also required to successfully complete a final, written comprehensive examination. An oral examination may be required at the discretion of the examining committee. Following the comprehensive examination, students must complete an overseas internship and write a final report which interrelates the academic and internship experiences.

Those interested in the program should contact either the School of Public Administration or the School of International Relations for further information. The director and advisor of the program is Donald Fuller.
