040x Approaches to Expository Writing (4, FaSp) Intensive instruction and practice in principles of expository writing. Emphasis on rhetorical, analytic, and grammatical techniques necessary for successful university-level writing. Not available for degree credit. Graded CR/NC. Prerequisite: limited to and required of students who score below specified level on the USC Composition Placement Examination.

095x Writing Tutorial (1, FaSp) Individualized instruction in expository writing to support instruction in Composition 101, 102, 111, and 112. Graded CR/NC. Not available for degree credit. Concurrent enrollment in Composition 101, 102, 111 or 112.

101 Introduction to Expository Writing (4, FaSp) Instruction and intensive practice in writing expository prose. Emphasis on analytic techniques for achieving well-developed ideas, effective organization, and clarity of expression. Writing Center required. Prerequisite: a satisfactory score on the USC Composition Placement Examination or on the verbal portion of the SAT, or credit for 040x.

102 Topics in Expository Writing (4, FaSpSm) Instruction and practice in critical reading and argumentation. Emphasis on analysis of texts, logical arguments, research techniques, and effective style. Writing Center required. Prerequisite: COMP 101, COMP 111 or CORE 111.

105 Writing Workshop (2, Sp) Intensive, individualized practice in analytic and expository writing with emphasis on constructing logical arguments, effective use of outside sources, and improving style. Graded CR/NC. Prerequisite: COMP 102 or COMP 112.

111 Expository Writing I for Non-Native Speakers (4, FaSp) Instruction and intensive practice in writing expository prose. Emphasis on elements of exposition, techniques for developing ideas, organizing essays, constructing English sentences. Writing Center required. Prerequisite: limited to students whose first language is not English. Domestic students must have a satisfactory score on the verbal portion of the SAT or the USC Composition Placement Examination, or credit for 040x. International students must have completed all required work at the American Language Institute.

112 Expository Writing II for Non-Native Speakers (4, FaSpSm) Instruction and intensive practice in critical reading and argumentation. Emphasis on analysis of texts, constructing logical arguments, research techniques, and clear expression. Writing Center required. Prerequisite: Limited to students whose first language is not English. Completion of COMP 101 or COMP 111.

501ab Theory and Practice in Teaching Expository Writing (1-1, FaSp) Pedagogical application of rhetorical and linguistic theory to teaching university-level expository writing. Accompanies supervised teaching. Limited to assistant lecturers and teaching assistants. Graded CR/NC.
