Undergraduate Programs
The economics curriculum is oriented toward a general, liberal education. Broadly based course work is an extremely important part of the economics major, including work in the physical and other social sciences as well as in the humanities. The study of economics also requires adequate preparation in mathematics and statistics. The standard undergraduate degree at USC is a four year B.A. degree. In the curriculum of the department, there is a "core" of four upper division courses: two in economic theory and two in statistical methods, with calculus and computer science prerequisites. Four elective upper division courses complete the standard economics major. A four-year accelerated program in economics, leading to the M.A. degree, is available for students who have very high standards of performance. The department also offers an interdepartmental major, in which students select five upper division economics courses to combine with three upper division courses in the other social sciences. This major provides the greatest latitude in the construction of a liberal arts major with a concentration in economics. The department also offers an economics minor, consisting of four upper division economics courses, for students majoring in other disciplines.
Graduate Programs
The department offers a Master of Arts in Economics, a Master of Arts in Economic Developmental Programming, dual degrees with the Law Center and the School of Urban and Regional Planning, a Doctor of Philosophy in Economics, a Doctor of Philosophy in Pharmaceutical Economics and Policy and a Doctor of Philosophy in Political Economy and Public Policy.
