Advisement and Academic Services

The College of Letters, Arts and Sciences Advisement Office provides services that integrate students, faculty, staff, academic disciplines and curriculum into a meaningful educational experience through a wide range of advisement services and programs.

Advisement is mandatory for all students entering the college until they have completed 24 units at USC. However, all college students are strongly urged to seek individual academic advisement at least once during each semester. Guidance in general education requirements, policies and program planning is readily available either by appointment or on a walk-in basis. Advisement in major course requirements is always available within the department of the studentŐs major.

The services of a college ombudsman are available to students who have academic concerns of a complex nature. The ombudsman functions as an intermediary with other offices on campus.

Advisement for Pre-Health Programs

Many students are planning to continue their education in health profession programs. Specialized advisement and assistance throughout the application process is provided for students who are planning to enter medical, dental, pharmacy or any health related professional programs.

Advisement for Pre-Law Programs

Students who are interested in going to law school receive academic advisement about courses within the general education curriculum or within their particular majors; they receive guidance about how to write a powerful and effective personal statement; their letters of recommendation are housed within the office; and they are put in touch with appropriate pre-law societies.

International and Transfer Advisement Services

International students and students transferring from four- and two-year institutions receive special advisement to facilitate their transition to USC.
