This concentration prepares students for leadership positions in middle and senior management across a broad segment of industries. Subjects covered range from broad political and economic issues to behavioral issues in decision making and influence. The courses adopt the perspective of general managers who must (1) analyze and solve complex problems of an interdisciplinary nature, and (2) plan and implement changes throughout an organization.

Venture Management

Venture management encompasses career interests in starting or buying a business, continuing a family business and venturing within the structure of a corporation. The content of courses ranges from financing new ventures to managing the creativity process. Typical issues include preparing a financial plan and managing and preparing joint ventures.

Technology Management

The technology management concentration prepares students for careers in product development, manufacturing, project management, and planning within the context of high technology businesses. The content of this concentration encompasses a broad exposure to major issues affecting the formulation and implementation of business plans within this dynamic and changing sector of the economy. Students will be exposed to problems inherent in the estimation and the development of marketing plans, fostering and sustaining an innovative spirit within business, and integrating and coordinating the interfunctional linkages necessary to bring new products and services to market. Students may take courses offered through the School of Engineering with the consent of the concentration coordinator and student advisor.

Financial Services

A concentration in financial services is suggested for students who plan to pursue careers in banking, insurance, securities underwriting and trading, and related financial services. This concentration is also recommended to students planning careers where frequent contact with financial institutions is common, such as corporate treasury or real estate finance. Students study the major financial institutions and how they interact in financial markets to determine credit flows and interest rates. The major topics in financial management of financial service firms are studied in depth, including valuation of financial services, risk management and courses of value in financial service product lines. The impact of macroeconomic variables and the regulatory environment on financial services is stressed throughout. FBE 525 is required.

Consulting Services

The consulting services concentration prepares students for careers as either external or internal consultants in a variety of fields such as banking, entertainment, retailing and advertising. Students who elect the concentration learn methodological tools which, complemented by specialization in a func tional area, constitute a well-rounded preparation for a consulting career. Courses in this concentration cover the subject areas of data collection, analysis and presentation, managing client relationships and proposal presentation.
