462 Physiology for the Health Professions (4, Sp) (Enroll in PHBI 462)

500L Introductory Medical Microbiology (4, Fa) A survey of microorganisms which cause human infectious diseases including mechanisms of pathogenesis, principles of antibiotic usage, pertinent microbial genetics; lectures, laboratories and demonstrations. Prerequisite: one year general biology, one semester biochemistry.

501 Introduction to Immunology (1, Fa) Basic introduction into molecular, cellular, and clinical immunology for second year medical students and graduate students in Microbiology. (Duplicates credit in BISC 450L.)

502 Molecular and Cellular Immunology (2, max 8, 2 years, Sp) Specific topics to be scheduled on a yearly and rotating basis. Prerequisite: MICB 501.

503 Current Topics in Immunology (1, max 8, FaSp) Discussion forum on the diverse areas of research which constitute modern immunology. Prerequisite: MICB 501.

531 Cell Biology (4) (Enroll in INTD 531)

541 Immunochemistry (2, max 6, Irregular) Chemistry of antigens and antibodies; antigen-antibody reaction; biological consequences of antigen and antibody reactions.

542 Animal Virology (2, max 6, 2 years, Sp) Virus structure and chemistry; virus-cell interactions; aspects of virus genetics; molecular biology; pathogenesis, immunology, and evolution of viral infections.

543 Immunology Seminar Series (1, Irregular) Concepts of cellular immunology, their genetics control and biochemical basis as they relate to microbial, tumor and transplant immunity. Prerequisite: MICB 501.

549 Student Seminar Series (1, max 8, FaSp) Microbiology students will present research seminars describing their thesis progress.

550 Advanced Microbial Genetics (2, Irregular) Mechanisms of mutation and recombination in procaryotes and lower eucaryotes. Emphasis on bacteriophages, plasmids, and insertion sequences. Prerequisite: a course in genetics.

551 Procaryotic Molecular Genetics (4, Fa) Macromolecular processes and their regulation in procaryotics; DNA replication, transcription, and post-transcriptional events in general and as related to operons, phage biology, and eucaryotic organelles.

555 Differentiation and Hematopoietic Malignancies (2, Irregular) Kinetics of cell differentiation; growth of normal and malignant stem cells; radiobiology, immunobiology, and in vivo and in vitro techniques. Prerequisite: basic biology; calculus.

560 Recent Advances in Microbiology (1, max 6, FaSp) Intensive examination of selected topics in microbiology. Student presentations and critiques. Required for all graduate students.

562 Systems and Integrative Physiology (4) (Enroll in PHBI 562)

570 Microbiology Research Seminar (1, max 10, FaSpSm) Critical discussion of current research topics. Students present published and unpublished research results for discussion and critique. Prerequisite: current enrollment in Microbiology Ph.D. program.

590 Directed Research (1-12, FaSpSm) Research leading to the master's degree. Maximum units which may be applied to the degree to be determined by the department. Graded CR/NC.
