Department Major Requirements for the Bachelor of Arts in French

For the lower division, FREN 230 French Civilization and FREN 250 French IV (the latter may be waived by examination) are required. For the upper division, FREN 300 French Grammar and Composition, FREN 310 French Pronunciation, FREN 430 Advanced French, and five courses to be selected in consultation with the department advisor (no more than two of which may be in English) are required.

Department Minor Requirements

The department offers a French minor for students majoring in other disciplines. University requirements for minors are here. For the lower division, FREN 250 (which may be waived by examination) is required. For the upper division, FREN 300, 430 and three courses to be selected in consultation with the department advisor (no more than one of which may be in English) are required.

Sequence

A placement test is required of all students resuming French after high school courses in French. Credit is allowed for all college work taken above the level established by the test.

Major Requirements for the Bachelor of Arts, Humanities with an Emphasis in Italian

For the lower division, ITAL 120 Italian I, 150 Italian II and 220 Italian III or their equivalents are required in preparation for the major. ITAL 224 Intermediate Italian Conversation may also be required, if recommended by the advisor. For the upper division, 10 courses in humanities departments are normally required. Six of these courses must be Italian courses and include ITAL 320 Italian Composition and Conversation, ITAL 444 Advanced Italian Composition and Style and 450 Dante. ITAL 340 Italian Literature in Translation from 1861 to 1945 or any other Italian course may be required, if recommended by the advisor. An additional course is recommended for students who intend to continue their study of Italian at a graduate level.

Department Minor Requirements

The department offers an Italian minor for students majoring in other disciplines. For the lower division: ITAL 120, 150, 220 and 224 (16 units) are required. Some or all of these courses may be waived by examination. For the upper division: ITAL 320 or 444 (four units); one course chosen from ITAL 230, 340 and 350 to be taken concomitantly with ITAL 224 during the fourth semester of language study (four units); and three courses to be chosen from ITAL 430, 435, 450, 461, 462 and 470 (12 units). Only one course taught in English may be counted toward the minor.
