Alpha Pi Mu

Alpha Pi Mu is the industrial engineering honor society. Qualifications for election are: juniors in the upper one-fourth of their class, seniors in the upper one-third of their class and graduate students recommended by the department chair. Omega Rho

Omega Rho is the operations research honor society to recognize academic excellence in operations research and encourage study of operations research, management science and closely associated disciplines. Election is by nomination only during the spring semester. The advisor is Maged Dessouky, Assistant Professor, (213) 740-4891.

Degree Requirements

Bachelor of Science in Industrial and Systems Engineering

The minimum requirement for the degree is 130 units. A GPA of C (2.0) or higher is required in all upper division courses in the Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering, including any approved substitutes for these courses taken at USC. Minor in Industrial and Systems Engineering

A minor in industrial and systems engineering is offered for students from other engineering departments to provide them with further exposure to manufacturing approaches and systems design relating to their major.

Prerequisite courses (or equivalent): MATH 225, MATH 226, FORTRAN.

Students must be upper division students in good standing in another engineering department.

A maximum of two upper division courses for the minor may overlap course work counted toward fulfillment of the student's major, whether required or used for elective credit.

Bachelor of Science in Industrial and Systems Engineering (Manufacturing Engineering)

If a student chooses six courses (9 to 18 units) from a prescribed program, he or she may graduate with the special designation Area of Emphasis in Manufacturing Engineering on the transcript. Details are given under Manufacturing Engineering.

Master of Science in Industrial and Systems Engineering

The Master of Science in Industrial and Systems Engineering is in strict conformity with the general requirements of the School of Engineering. This program enhances the technical capabilities of the industrial engineer. The student may elect one of the following four options to meet the 30 unit course requirement for the degree:

Students possessing a bachelor's degree in science, engineering or a related field such as natural science, mathematics, economics or psychology may work for the Master of Science in Industrial and Systems Engineering upon completion of prerequisites.

In certain cases some of the deficiencies may be waived if the applicant passes qualifying examinations, which may be either oral or written.

Dual Degree Program (M.S./M.B.A.)

The Graduate School of Business Administration in conjunction with the Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering offers a program leading to the degree of Master of Business Administration/Master of Science in Industrial and Systems Engineering in which 15 units of ISE electives are recognized by the GSBA. Preliminary courses in the Master of Business Administration program may be waived for subject credit by the GSBA if the student has completed acceptable course work from an AACSB accredited school. The total number of units required for the M.B.A. program is 48. To complete the M.B.A., all students must maintain an overall grade point average of 3.0 and complete the computer proficiency requirement for the M.B.A. program.

This alternative requires 66 units for graduates of industrial and systems engineering undergraduate curricula and leads to both a Master of Science in Industrial and Systems Engineering and the Master of Business Administration. The dual degree provides an education of great depth.

Required GSBA courses include: all first year courses required in the full-time M.B.A. program (36 units) - although GSBA 524 Applied Managerial Statistics and GSBA 534 Operations Management may be substituted for by the School of Business on the basis of successful completion of ISE 220, ISE 325 and CS 455x with grades of B or better; GSBA 585 Business Field Project (3 units); and three electives from ACCT, BAEP, BUCO, DS, FBE, FIM, or MOR prefixes (9 units).

This program is designed primarily, but not exclusively, for graduate engineers whose career objectives lead to increasing technical management responsibilities. Students interested in the engineering management objectives may also want to consider the M.S., Industrial and Systems Engineering/M.B.A. dual degree program.

Master of Science in Engineering Management

A total of 33 units is required for the degree. A minimum of 15 units must be taken in the Industrial and Systems Engineering Department (and at least 18 in the School of Engineering). Eighteen units must be at the 500 level or above.

The Master of Science in Operations Research Engineering is conferred upon candidates who hold bachelor's degrees in engineering, mathematics, science or related fields who successfully complete an integrated program (with departmental approval in advance) of not less than 30 units. The program must include not less than 15 units of industrial and systems engineering courses related to operations research and 15 units of approved electives. Students will be required to make up deficiencies in mathematics and statistics. Additional courses or examinations may be required at the discretion of the department before full admission to the program. The General Test of the Graduate Record Examinations (GRE) is required. Additional information is available from the department.
