The University of Southern California Law Center was the first law school in the Southwest. It was established in 1896 by a determined group of students. After deciding that the prevailing training system of apprenticeships in lawyers' offices was unsatisfactory, they formed the Los Angeles Law Students Association. In 1904, the law school originally formed by the students became part of the University of Southern California.
The Law Center provides education and training to diverse groups within the legal profession. Of course, the primary goal of the USC Law Center is the education of future lawyers, and the Juris Doctor program is the core of the enterprise. Although the school has a strong regional base, it has always been a national law school, attracting students and faculty from around the nation.
