The Center for Excellence in Teaching, founded in 1990, is committed to enriching the unique teaching and learning opportunities of a research university. At USC the faculty work directly with undergraduate students. Together faculty and students form a diverse academic community of women and men of all social classes, races, ethnic groups and nationalities who teach, study and learn in a rich array of academic fields. Administered by a faculty director and advisory board, the Center for Excellence in Teaching believes that faculty excellence and campus diversity are the basis for a superb undergraduate experience.

The Center for Excellence in Teaching (CET) pursues three paths to excellence in undergraduate education. First, it is a resource and forum for the university's "scholar-teachers." It assists new faculty in launching research programs that strengthen the curriculum. It works with experienced faculty to develop innovative ways to communicate research in the classroom. It cooperates with all faculty to strengthen general education and diversity. A unique asset of a research university is scholars' ability to teach students what they know and then provide them with a direct experience in the process of discovery.

Second, CET is committed to the notion that properly-trained graduate teaching assistants are another major asset in undergraduate education. The center trains graduate teaching assistants who lead small discussion groups, staff laboratories and grade assignments. Graduate TAs bridge the generation gap between faculty and undergraduates and provide an accessibility which thickens the bonds of the academic community. They also internationalize classrooms, sharing insights into culture and science drawn from 100 different countries.

Finally, CET strives to create a kinetic academic culture. It provides recognition and awards for top scholar-teachers selected by faculty and students. It sponsors a fortnightly gathering on teaching and special seminars for USC faculty and area educators on innovative teaching ideas.
